Sargassum in Riviera Maya: What You Need to Know Before Your Family Trip

Worried about sargassum in Riviera Maya? Discover when to travel, which beaches to avoid, and why Sensira is ideal for families.

Sargassum is a recurring topic when discussing vacations in the Mexican Caribbean. If you're planning a family trip to the Riviera Maya, it's important to have accurate information to make the best decisions.

    What is Sargassum?

Sargassum is a seaweed that arrives on Caribbean shores in varying quantities depending on the season and ocean currents. Although it's a natural phenomenon, in recent years it has intensified due to changes in ocean temperatures.

It's important to know that sargassum is neither dangerous nor toxic, although it can affect beach aesthetics and, in large quantities, generate an unpleasant odor.

    When is There More Sargassum?

Peak sargassum season is typically between May and August, with peaks in June and July. However, every year is different and quantities can vary significantly.

The months with less sargassum presence are November through April, coinciding with the dry season, making them the best time to visit if this concerns you.

What Does Sensira Do About It?

At Sensira Resort & Spa, we have a dedicated beach cleaning team that works from the early morning hours to keep our beaches as clean as possible. Additionally, we have anti-sargassum barriers in the water that significantly reduce the algae's arrival to shore.

Our pools, including the infinity pool with sea views, the family pool, and the aquapark, offer perfect alternatives to enjoy the water worry-free.

    Tips for Your Trip

    • Travel between November and April to minimize sargassum presence
    • Check updated reports on social media before your trip
    • Remember that Sensira has multiple pools as an alternative
    • Sargassum doesn't affect snorkeling activities or cenote tours
