Sargassum in the Caribbean: How Sensira Resort Keeps Its Beaches Ready for Your Vacation

Enjoy Sensira Resort & Spa Riviera Maya. Learn about sargassum season and how we keep our beaches clean for your vacation starting in September.

In recent years, sargassum in the Mexican Caribbean has become a common topic, especially in areas like Cancún, Riviera Maya, and Tulum. It's a floating macroalgae that, when it arrives in large quantities, can affect the look and smell of the beach — but it's also a natural phenomenon that changes day by day.

In 2026, reports point to one of the most intense sargassum seasons, with large volumes reaching the coasts of Quintana Roo. Most of that arrival concentrates in spring and summer, especially May, June, and July, and it usually decreases starting in August and September, while beaches typically see much less sargassum from November to February.

How we care for the beach in front of the hotel

What matters most to our guests is knowing what's happening on the beach right in front of the hotel. At Sensira Resort & Spa Riviera Maya, we run a daily cleaning and maintenance program: early each morning, our team removes any sargassum that arrived overnight so the sand stays as clean and pleasant as possible. When needed, we reinforce this work with machinery and additional support to better care for the shoreline.

Thanks to this constant effort, even during the strongest months of the season, we aim to keep the beach experience comfortable and safe for everyone who visits us. Starting in September, the combination of a lower expected arrival and daily cleaning lets our guests enjoy the Caribbean Sea, the pools, and beachfront activities with even more peace of mind.

Fall and winter: the best window

If you're planning your vacation for fall or winter, you'll find an even more favorable scenario: historically, these are the months with the least sargassum presence, and combined with our ongoing maintenance, the beach in front of Sensira Resort is ready to welcome you in the best conditions. Our guest services team can always share up-to-date information on how the beach looks and recommend the best times to enjoy it.
